Rawhides

Rawhides are the inner layer of the hide usually from a cow. Rawhides are given to pets as toys (keep them busy) and to help their teeth. Many dogs (especially puppies) have an inner instinct to chew. Rawhides give dogs something "acceptable" to chew on as well as benefiting from the action of chewing by putting pressure on their gums and scraping their teeth helping with dental health.

Rawhides can be used by every dog, but there are situations to watch out for.

* Rawhides are not to be used by dogs with a history of vomiting, diarrhea, allergies, or those on a special diet until you check with your vet first.

* When giving your dog a rawhide, ALWAYS SUPERVISE them to make sure they don't have any signs of allergies, inability to chew, or in case they may choke. When the rawhide gets too small where it could be swallowed, we recommend it be taken away to deter any choking hazards. Please do this with all dogs of any age or breed. Choking can happen within seconds, and we don't need any unhappy situation occurring in your home.

* Limit the quanities of rawhides and always watch the size of rawhide you are giving your pet. Make sure to correlate the size of the bone to the size of your dog, i.e giving a small rawhide to a Newfoundland would just be ridiculous and unsafe for the dog.

* Check to see where your rawhides are made. US MADE RAWHIDES ARE BEST!! Other countries such as China, Thailand, and India don't have the thorough processing requirements as we do here in the United States. In these countries, salmonella, lead, pesticides, arsenic, insecticides and antibiotics can be added into rawhides. Some places even use dog or cat skin that may not be recognizable to the human eye. Yuck! Please avoid any rawhides/bones made in these countries! Support the US!

* There are calories in rawhides. Please don't use rawhides as a food source, only as a special treat in conjunction to their well balanced and healthy diet. Moderation is key! Some say that 2 hours of chewing a day is sufficient for most pets per day.

Were you adopted as a baby or as an adult?
I was adopted at 7 weeks, I tipped the scales at 2.5 pounds.
Where were you born?
I was born near Itasca State Park, in northern Minnesota, it’s really cold up there in the winter!
Have you traveled outside of MN?
Sadly no, but I’m hoping to see the mountains in Colorado when gas prices stabilize.
Who are your human family members?
Mike and Marcie
Do you share the house with a cat/bird/critter?
I share the household with Kaliber, a Black Labrador Retriever. She is my number one chew toy. She only gets away from me because she can swim faster.
Who is the boss in your house?
Are you serious? It’s me!
Do you have a doggie girlfriend/boyfriend?
I have many dog pals of both genders or former genders.
How would you spend your ideal day?
My ideal day involves chasing chipmunks at the lake, napping on the deck, lots of treats, a boat ride, and a campfire to end the day.
Who are your best friends?
My best friend is Kaliber, and the labs next door, Hunter and Sierra.
Do you know any tricks?
Yes I do, my personal favorite is “roll over” and I learned other tricks at Paws Inn. It’s simply amazing what treats they will give for a simple little trick! It’s a great scam for us dogs.
