REMEM-BRRRR:
Dogs are vulnerable in frigid weather!
  • Short-coated and dogs low to the ground freeze faster
  • Ears, toes, and tail tips can get frostbite
  • Ice-melting chemicals are very hard on dog paws
  • Shivering is an early sign of hypothermia

So, what should you do?

  • Buy a coat for your dog to keep his body core warmer
  • If ears, paws, and tail are cold to the touch, re-warm them gradually
  • Protect dog pads with boots or rub baby oil into them. Keeping nails trimmed and foot hairs short helps reduce ice clumps between toes
  • Bring "outside" dogs indoors if the temps or wind chills are sub-zero

FreeKibble.com and CANIDAE Continue to Work Together to Feed Pets in Need

CANIDAE is proud to continue making donations to FreeKibble.com, a charity dedicated to providing high quality food to shelter dogs and cats from Oregon to Florida. FreeKibble.com was founded by twelve-year-old Mimi Ausland from Bend, Oregon, who wanted to help feed the hungry animals at her local animal shelter. "There are tens of thousands of dogs and cats in animal shelters across the country, all needing to be fed a good meal," said Mimi. The success of her website and charity stems from how simple it is to donate. Visitors go to FreeKibble.com and answer the Bow Wow Trivia question of the day. Each day one plays, no matter if his or her answer is right, FreeKibble.com is able to donate 10 more pieces of kibble to a needy shelter. We hope you will join us in visiting each day!

~A little history~

The love for dogs I have started at a very young age with companion animals that were part of my family growing up. My passion for dogs came with my first dog as an adult. Together we discovered the fun of dog parks, long walks, dog agility, obedience, fly ball and herding. Over the next 5-7 years, my husband and I added three more dogs to our family. As my love of dogs grew, so did my interest in health care, nutrition and training. Over the last fifteen years, I have attended and participated in numerous educational workshops and seminars.

Interest in canine massage came easily when one of my dogs starting refusing jumps and was less excited about playing Frisbee. I was referred to Cindy Hickey of Supreme Motion; a well known canine and equine sports massage therapist in the Twin Cities. With Cindy’s help, my dog’s muscle injury was discovered. Over the next several months, Cindy provided massage on a regular basis for my dog and instructed me on how to be more proactive with the health care of my dogs so that I may avoid any similar injuries in the future. Impressed and convinced of the power of regular bodywork, I pursued Supreme Motion’s canine sports massage certification.

Canine Sports Massage certification was 300 hours of intense class room training with the majority of time spent working “hands on” with dogs. The curriculum included anatomy, physiology, nutrition, gait analysis, conformation evaluation, massage techniques, biomechanics of performance dogs, post injury healing, acupressure and Bach Flower Essences. Since my certification, I have also become a student of life enhancing essential oils; adding to my ability to assist in personal care for your canines every day life.

My canine massage business has grown since its start in March 2006. Currently, my clients include canine athletes, post surgical dogs, arthritic dogs and a few couch potatoes. Many of my weekends are spent at canine sporting events providing pre and post massage to canine athletes.

My approach to massage is one of more natural principles; looking at the dog as a whole. My goal is not only to provide all the benefits of massage, but to teach you, the owner, how to be proactive with your dogs health care.

Today, I continue to play with my dogs and continue to strive for more knowledge to better their lives. This knowledge, I would like to share with you.

Learn basic massage techniques you can put to use right away with your dog. Learn proper warm up, cool down and stretching techniques and their importance. Learn what to be aware of to help your canine athlete feel their best.

Have You Looked Lately?

Ever read the ingredients in the dog food you give your dog? Some ingredients are not necessarily good for dogs! Take a look:
DOG FOOD SHOULD CONTAIN:
TWO MEAT SOURCES in the top three ingredients - that means chicken, lamb, beef, fish and chicken meal, lamb meal, beef meal, and fish meal
WHOLE UNPROCESSED grains and vegetables
GOOD GRAINS like rice, barley, oatmeal, whole wheat
USDA Organic ingredients

DON'T BUY IT IF IT CONTAINS:
any kind of Meat/Poultry by-products
Animal fat
Corn
BHT/BHA or Ethozyquin EQ
Artificial colors, flavors
Added sweeteners
Don't be misled by pictures and advertisements of dog food bags
that may influence your selections.

Give us a call at Paws Inn Resort for help selecting a more nutritious food for your dog. You will notice many improvements in your dog's health and appearance, such as:

Thicker, more shiny coat

Less licking of feet (sign of allergy)

Scratching subsides

Better behavior

Fewer ear infections

A Spring in Her Step!

Shadow, our 8-year-old black Lab started limping one day, about a year ago. We thought she injured herself fetching tennis balls, but the limping continued. At the vet we found out she had some arthritis starting and prescribed medication. The med helped, but the long-term side effects were not good, so we tried to limit it, which caused her pain to come and go. Thinking her fetching days were over, I had a conversation with Jodi at Paws Inn. She suggested Joint Complete, a natural supplement...it has been a miracle product for Shadow! She no longer limps or shows any sign of pain, and her fetching is better than ever. The best things is, there are no side effects. Thanks so much to the experts at Paws Inn for the great advice!
~Chanda L.

Our Golden Retriever, Lucy, met Jodi eight years ago at her first puppy class and began going to Paws Inn for boarding soon after that. It is reassuring for us to know that Jodi is a Vet Tech, so she recognizes any health issues before they become serious. Upon her recommendation, we are feeding Nature's Variety and the Joint Complete has added spring to Lucy's step.
~Jim & Carol O.

GOOD NEWS! Only $17.99 for a 32 oz. bottle!

(sugg.retail price $29)

A dog or cat under 15# only needs 1/4 oz. a day; 16-50# needs 1/2 oz.; 51-100# needs 1 oz.

Dogs and cats over five years old benefit from a Glucosamine and Chondroitin supplement. JOINT COMPLETE liquid is a superior product. Just pour it over the food once a day - good tasting beef flavor. What a relief it will be for your pet!

ONE MORE SUCCESS STORY!
I have an 11-year-old Mastiff , to whom I have been giving glucosamine for a few years now. Jodi at Paws Inn Resort recommended I give Joint Complete a try as a supplement. Not only did my dog like it ,but she was very noticeably moving more easily and didn't have as much trouble getting up. But if that wasn't enough to convince me, I ran out and hadn't planned on picking more up for a couple days...my dog could barely move and struggled to pull herself to her feet. I went to get more that day! Joint Complete makes that big of a difference !

Did you know?

Paws Inn Resort can certify your dog to become a Canine Good Citizen?

What is the Canine Good Citizen (CGC)?

Started in 1989, CGC is a certification program that is designed to reward dogs who have good manners at home and in the community. The Canine Good Citizen Program is a program that stresses responsible pet ownership for owners and basic good manners for dogs. All dogs who pass the 10-step CGC test may receive a certificate from the American Kennel Club (AKC).

Paws Inn Resort's training classes Paws Insight Levels 1 & 2 cover all the areas in the CGC testing for you to have your dog become the well mannered pet that you will enjoy! You can then go on and test for the Canine Good Citizen certification right at Paws Inn on the designated date of testing we set up.

If you have any more questions on the CGC testing or any of our training classes, please call us at 952-353-8006! Also, go to the AKC's website to read more about the CGC at www.akc.org.

Bob-A-Lot

The Bob-A-Lot recently won the bronze award for best new product at the HH Backer Pet Trade Show. Both the top and bottom chambers feature adjustable openings to regulate the difficulty in which the dog removes the treats. It holds up to three cups of food in a variety of sizes, and is a great way to feed and exercise your dog. The Bob-A-Lot is made from a durable polymer with an anti-slip coating on the bottom. One size is appropriate for dogs of all sizes.

Baby it's cold outside!

Mom ~ I'm bored...what can I do since I can't go outside?

BRRRRRR! Minnesota winters can be harsh and the weather can get nasty cold. This all means that our furry friends aren't able to head outside to burn off energy, which means they can get bored!

Boredom = Naughty Doggies

Dogs that aren't getting enough playtime or things to keep them busy can lead to destructive behaviors such as chewing, ripping, and destroying anything they can get their paws on (or teeth on).

Paws Inn Resort has the solution for you!

Check out our interactive toys that will keep your dog's mind stimulated while inside your home. We have Bouncy Bones, Treat Balls, Puzzle toys, and SO MUCH MORE! Stop in today to pick up a new toy for your dog to entertain themselves with and to keep the "naughty dog" from entering your house.

Late but awesome find!

Dr. Ian Dunbar's book "Before You Get Your Puppy" is a must-read for anyone thinking about getting a puppy. We think it is so important that owners are prepared before they adopt their pup that we are making the entire book available here for free download.

Go to www.dogstardaily.com and download the entire book today (available in PDF).

Book Review

Summary

Play is fun, but don’t be fooled into thinking it’s just goofy or frivolous. Play is powerful stuff, and it has a profound influence on your relationship with your dog. This engagingly written booklet shows how play can enhance your relationship with your dog, improve your dog’s responsiveness, and provide your dog with the mental and physical exercise he or she needs. Inside is up-to-date research on how to tell your dog you want to play (most of us aren’t very good at it!), some charming tricks and games to wow your friends, and an important section on how not to play with your dog. If you'd like a happier, more responsive dog and a closer relationship with each other, then this booklet is for you.

Jodi gives this book a thumbs up!

Jodi believes this is an short, easy read for dog owners of all levels. She likes how it uses play to enhance your relationship and it gives examples of games to play as well as how to implement learning while teaching them. To name a few games, they recommend Ball, Find It, Tricks including Sniffing on Cue, Jumping Through a Hoop. If you are looking for more organized classes, it runs through and explains classes you can look for and join. Most of all, it just plain tells you how to play with your dog! Jodi feels this is a great book for those of you with new puppies all the way through senior dogs.

Here is where Jodi found this awesome book!
